Bear Andrews Flies: | Steelhead Patterns | Traditional Patterns

Bear developed these patterns for steelhead fishing in the Great Lakes Region, but has found them effective for trout, salmon, and other species as well. Almost every steelhead angler in Michigan is carrying some of Bear's patterns in the flybox.

Bear's Crystal Egg
A highly effective egg pattern that outfishes glo bugs any day.

Hook: Dai-Riki #135 size 8
Thread: Florescent orange 8/0 Uni-thread
Tail: 3 strands of White Fluorofibre and 1 strand of Pearl Comes Alive
Body: Estaz in the color of choice
Wing: Egg Yarn

The Headbanger

Hook: Tiemco 200R # 4-10
Thread: Tan Uni-thread 8/0
Tail: Micro Bug Yarn, color of your choice
Ribbing: Clear mono thread or fine silver wire
Back and Wing Case: Pheasant Tail Fibers
Dubbing: Spirit River Squirrel Blend in Sulphur Color
Gills: Aftershaft from a yellow pheasant rump
Hackle: Hen Saddle, color of your choice
Eyes: Spirit River Mono, X-small

Bear's Caddis Larva
A new, improved version of an old standby. Rhyacophila caddis larvae that get dislodged from the gravel when steelhead are spawning.

Hook: Tiemco 2457 size 6-10
Thread: Black Uni-thread
Body: Caddis-green Holographic Dubbing
Thorax: Black Spirit River Squirrel Blend Dubbing

 

Bear's Saddleback Hex

Hook: Tiemco 200R # 4-10
Thread: Tan Uni-thread 8/0
Tail: The fluff from yellow pheasant rump
Ribbing: Mono thread, clear
Back and Wing Case: Yellow Hoffman Grizzly dyed yellow and treated with Soft-Tex
Dubbing: Spirit River Squirrel Blend in Sulphur Color
Gills: Aftershaft from a yellow pheasant rump
Hackle: Whiting American Hackle: White Lace Hen dyed olive.
Eyes: Spirit River Mono, X-small

Jeff "Bear" Andrews was one of the first anglers to capitalize on the fact that Steelhead love Hexagenia limbata nymphs. He has developed many patterns, including Bear's Hex.

The Sparrow

Hook: Tiemco 3761 #6-10
Thread: Tan Uni-thread 8/0
Tail: Fluff from base of pheasant rump feather
Body: Dubbing Brush in a Yellow-Olive Color
Hackle: Yellow Pheasant rump
Collar: Aftershaft feather from pheasant rump
Flash: One-two pieces of Pearl Krysal Flash or Flashaboo tied in after the rump feather hackle and before the aftershaft.

 

Bear's Steelhead Sparrow

Hook: Tiemco 3761 #6-10
Thread: Tan Uni-thread 8/0
Tail: Fluff from base of pheasant rump feather
Body: Rust Dubbing Brush
Hackle: Natural Pheasant rump
Collar: Aftershaft feather from pheasant rump
Flash: One-two pieces of Pearl Krysal Flash or Flashaboo tied in after the rump feather hackle and before the aftershaft.

Body: Purple Holographic Dubbing

Collar: Aftershaft feather from black pheasant rump
Flash: One piece of Pearl Krysal Flash or Flashaboo tied in after the rump feather hackle and before the aftershaft.
